Gone to Soon Doctor

Dr. Vimbai Chivaura (above) passed on yesterday morning. He was captured here at a function held at the University of Zimbabwe where Prof. Robert Muponde was having a discussion with students about his new book 'Some Kinds of Childhood' which is basically literary criticism.

In the corridors of the University of Zimbabwe’s English Department I would meet you and you never missed a chance to educate. Even when I visited our writing mentors in the same department like Memory Chirere, Josephine Muganiwa and others, and you found me in their offices, you would make sure you equip me with some deep cultural and historical matters. I remember after Chirere introduced me to you, having also told you I am a journalist/writer, you would say after a strong lecture to me about any current cultural matter, “Ndimi ma journalists and creative writers, tell the truth!”. You indeed put into me a spirit of responsible writing and a certain love for the person that I am, that is, AFRICAN. I will miss your debates and wisdom. Rest in Peace our guru and writer. The nation at large will always remember your wise words – Beaven Tapureta (WIN Founder & Director)

A Week Of Literature and History

Renowned writer and publisher Barbara Nkala at the follow-up workshop on curriculum review organized by ZIBF and held at the Holiday Inn, Harare, on Saturday, Oct 31.

The past week was for rumination about our languages, literature and history, with three literary events happening at very close intervals. On Wednesday, October 28, the former education minister, Aeneas Chigwedere, launched his three books at the Maestro Restaurant in Highlands, Harare.
The books, published by Mutapa Publishing House, are "The Mutasa Manyika Dynasty (1695-2000)", "Shona Chieftainships -- Principles of Succession", and "Chimurenga 1 -- The Anti-Portuguese War (1675-1695)".
On Saturday, October 31, writers and publishers from different provinces converged at Holiday Inn in Harare for a follow-up workshop on the current curriculum review process. The day-long workshop, held courtesy of ZIBF and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, was under the theme "The Impact of Curriculum Review in Writing and Publishing".
Late afternoon the same Saturday, various artists proceeded to another event at Queensdale Sports Club, to celebrate the life and works of iconic writer Chenjerai Hove who passed on in July this year.
While the book launch and the commemoration of the late Chenjerai Hove lived up to expectation, the workshop also had its own exciting and tense moments. (Adapted from The Herald)
