LIFE IS A BOOK

Back and front covers of Mabasa’s latest offering of Shona poetry

WRITERS INTERNATIONAL NETWORK ZIMBABWE’s award-winning blog has taken off late this year, with this post here as the first. Hence, warm greetings to you all our friends in the world of literature from the motherland and beyond.

Writers are a very patient people embracing ‘observation’ before writing anything. Writers are like that by nature, loving exploring the complex depths of the imagination and real life.

The online WIN Newsletter is continuing.

The first three months of 2025 have been exciting with writers’ adventures such as the inaugural Sharjah Festival of African Literature (SFAL) which featured ‘more than 37’ celebrated African writers, among them Petina Gappah and Tendai Huchu from Zimbabwe, and the 23rd NAMA Awards which brought us an appetizing list of titles in its literary category. We say congratulations to the winning writers!

A number of new books – poetry, fiction and nonfiction in English and Shona languages - have so far appeared. There is the Shona novel by young Obvious T Dziwanyika titled Kenero (Colonel) Mabhiza, there’s also a Shona poetry collection Zvingori Zvidhori Nezvigure Zvakadhakwa by famous writer Ignatius T Mabasa, and various other books which we hope to get hold of.

The new books altogether with the NAMA-nominated and eventual winning titles surely launch us onto a unique reading journey. And we are still looking forward to more new publications as the year ‘drunkenly’ moves onwards. Watch this space for reviews!

We believe women are great leaders and inspirers. In this spirit we join the world in honouring the International Women’s Day (March 8) of which celebration goes for the month tagged the women's month. We know every day is women's day.

We have greatest reason to be joyful as Zimbabwe's swimming legend Hon. Dr Kirsty Coventry (Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture) recently became the first female president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Although her deepest passion is sport, her life story inspires all kinds of talent.

Lastly, still with women in mind, we are glad to notify you of the Miss Ebony Zimbabwe Pageant taking place on March 28, 2025, in Harare at the Harare Agricultural Show Grounds.
